Media students create film to celebrate 160 years of YMCA
Media Studies students Chelsea Harrington and Mathew Robson created a short film whilst on a GO Wales work taster; this was part of an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia mapping the YMCAs work and achievements over nearly 160 years in Cardiff. The video entitled ‘More than a Roof’ is incredibly touching and gives viewers an insight into the work of the YMCA.
Mathew Robson, the student director of the film said, “We were asked by the YMCA to produce a short film following the lives of several residents of the YMCA in Cardiff. The interviews we conducted were, although very difficult to cope with at the time, incredibly detailed and very touching. At the recommendation of the TRIG (Tenants and Residents Information Group) we filmed several shots in Cardiff Bay which would be juxtaposed with places where the homeless can reside. After the video was produced we attended the premier with, among others, the Lord Mayor of Cardiff. The video was put together with collaboration from the YMCA, GO Wales and Coleg Glan Hafren to be shown in The Old Library for a total run of six weeks. Following the premiere the film has been distributed to The South Wales Echo, YMCA marketing officials and to local film festivals.”
